How to Spend the Fourth of July in Sonoma County: A Local’s Guide
Parades, Fireworks, Small-Town Traditions & Wine Country Charm
There’s something timeless about the Fourth of July in Sonoma County. Picture historic town squares lined with American flags, children riding decorated bicycles through neighborhood parades, live music under towering oak trees, and families gathering for picnics before fireworks light up the evening sky.
Whether you’re a longtime local, planning a holiday weekend in Wine Country, or considering making Sonoma County home, Independence Day is one of the best times to experience the warmth and charm of our communities. Here are some of my favorite ways to celebrate.
Sonoma Plaza: A Classic Fourth of July
If you’re looking for quintessential Americana, Sonoma Plaza is hard to beat.
The day begins with a beloved community parade around the historic town square, followed by live music, family activities, local food vendors, and one of the most picturesque settings in Northern California. As evening arrives, families gather on blankets and lawn chairs before fireworks illuminate the Sonoma sky.
It’s one of those traditions that reminds you why so many people fall in love with Wine Country.
Healdsburg: Small-Town Charm at Its Finest
Healdsburg celebrates Independence Day with a delightful children’s parade, community festivities, and an evening fireworks display.
Spend the morning strolling around the Plaza, enjoy lunch at one of the town’s exceptional restaurants, browse the boutiques, and finish the evening watching fireworks with friends and family.
It’s an effortless blend of sophistication and small-town charm.
Petaluma: A Relaxed Summer Evening
For those looking for a quieter celebration, Petaluma’s professional fireworks display offers a wonderful way to end the holiday.
Enjoy dinner downtown before finding a comfortable spot to watch the show. It’s a favorite tradition for many local families.
Kenwood: A True Community Celebration
Kenwood embraces the spirit of Independence Day with one of Sonoma County’s most cherished traditions.
The day includes a pancake breakfast, community footrace, hometown parade, and picnic in the park. It’s the kind of celebration that feels refreshingly unchanged, where neighbors gather and generations celebrate together.
Windsor: Celebrate Early
Windsor’s annual Kaboom! celebration takes place on July 3, making it an excellent option for those wanting to enjoy fireworks before the holiday crowds.
Live music, local food vendors, family activities, and a spectacular fireworks display make it a favorite for residents throughout Sonoma County.
Green Music Center: An Elevated Evening
For a more refined celebration, the Green Music Center in Rohnert Park combines live performances by the Santa Rosa Symphony and Transcendence Theatre Company with one of the area’s largest fireworks displays.
Pack a picnic, enjoy the concert, and experience a memorable evening under the stars.
Celebrating the Sonoma County Lifestyle
One of my favorite things about living in Sonoma County is the way holidays bring our communities together. Whether you’re enjoying a parade in Sonoma, an afternoon in Healdsburg, or fireworks in Petaluma, the Fourth of July captures everything that makes this region so special: beautiful surroundings, welcoming neighborhoods, and traditions that families return to year after year.
For many Bay Area families, weekends like these are what inspire the move north. Sonoma County offers more than beautiful homes. It offers a way of life centered on community, connection, and enjoying the moments that matter most.
Wishing you and your family a safe, joyful, and memorable Fourth of July.
